A Moderate Proposal
Everyone keeps talking about how the gun situation is an absolute standoff. Conservatives who tend to have become more extreme will absolutely not back down on a person's right to everything up to and including an assault rifle; meanwhile liberals scream out in anguish every time the wrong person gets a hold of one, wondering when this nation will come to its senses.I actually have a solution, but it's somewhat scary. Because I'm a moderate, I don't care how the problem is solved, only that it is solved, so we can send our kids to school again. If there's one thing I've learned from over forty years of parenting, it's that parents need at least one place to send their kids where they can be assured that someone is watching them.
Anyway, here's my solution and you tell me what its flaw(s) is/are. Go to Texas or Tennessee, and set up a program to give assault rifles to the poor.
Conservatives will absolutely hit the roof, since one of their biggest problems with liberal rule is the feeling that the poor are getting the benefits of their hard-earned money. Yes, and the poor are also getting angry that so many are so rich, and so fortressed up, that the world has become very divided. This solution takes the worst of the extremes: free gun rights for everyone, and redistributing wealth from the industrious to the lazy, and does it in a way that someone will solve the problem.
The only problem is, I don't really want to put more assault rifles in this world. I hate them. And if it comes to that, I'll chicken out. What I want to do though is to set up the program, make people alarmed, and hope they put some restrictions on assault rifles that would make that plan unfeasible. Then I'd be spared the moral agony of actually putting more rifles into the world.
Good plan, huh? I'm wondering if it would generate enough excitement to solve the problem quickly. I don't want to be the next victim in some random shopping facility.
